Intervention at the Foundations of Reading Comprehension

It is now well established that literacy development relies upon a strong foundation in oral language
and there is increasing concern over the number of children who enter UK primary schools with oral
language difficulties. Intervention is now high on the government agenda and there is a growing
emphasis being placed both on supporting early language and on the identification of evidencebased
interventions. This seminar will present the results from two randomised controlled trials
evaluating oral language intervention for children in preschool and reception classes. Results will be
discussed in terms of overall treatment effects as well as treatment effects seen in children with
differing language profiles. Current and future directions for intervention research will also be
