Movies Matter- 'Etre et Avoir'
Être et Avoir
Director: Nicholas Philibert
France Cert: U (2002)
104 minutes Documentary
The film is “a charming and intimate portrait of a single-class primary school in rural France and its inspirational teacher. Ranging in age from 4 to 10, the small handful of pupils are taught by the remarkable and wise Georges Lopez, whose patient and enlightened methods highlight a genuine affection for his young charges. Offering a touching and absorbing look at the heart of a village community, Philibert’s film was a surprise cinema hit which was warmly received by critics and won numerous awards including a BAFTA and European film award.”
The film is in French with English subtitles.
The film has been suggested by Dr Judith Hanks who asks: What does this film say about primary school education? Are there things we can learn from the film, or is it just a heart-warming fantasy (and a chance to practise listening to French)?
PGT and PGR students are particularly encouraged to attend- undergraduate students are equally welcome. Bring your own popcorn!
