Metaphor Analysis: Theoretical and methodological challenges in using discourse data. A research project funded by ESRC National Centre for Research Methods

Workshops

Theory-based expert seminar

Date: 8-9 May 2006

Location: York

Aim: To review the theoretical frameworks of cognitive and discourse dynamics and their implications for metaphor analysis.

Format

Expert speaker to introduce each of the theoretical frameworks. Questions to be explored:

  • How do the theories describe and explain the connection between what people say and what they think?
  • What do they allow and disallow as evidence of thinking?
  • What do they not account for?
  • How do they address the key issues in metaphor analysis?
  • How far are the two approaches compatible?
