PCGE Open Day success
The School of Education welcomes around 300 visitors and keynote speaker Jonny Mitchell (Leeds alumnus and star of Educating Yorkshire) to its October PGCE Open Day.
Our PGCE Open Day on the 19th October 2015 was a fantastic event with prospective students from a variety of backgrounds attending to learn more about our routes into teaching. Representatives from Student Finance England, partner schools and the University talked to prospective trainees about their options and possible funding. There were workshops on writing a personal statement and perfecting interview techniques when applying for a PGCE.
Leeds alumnus Jonny Mitchell, Principal of the The Co-operative Academy of Leeds, spoke to prospective trainees about the application process, and gave a glimpse of the challenges and rewards facing those embarking on a career in teaching. Prior to his current role Jonny spent nearly four years as the head teacher at Thornhill Academy in Dewsbury, during which time the Academy was featured in the BAFTA award-winning Channel 4 documentary Educating Yorkshire.
Along with our partner schools we offer three distinctive and high quality PGCE routes which lead to Qualified Teacher Status – University-led, School Direct and SCITT. All are one-year full-time programmes and place a strong emphasis on developing trainees’ subject knowledge and pedagogy.
