Congratulations to Professor Michael Baynham who has been conferred as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Congratulations to Professor Michael Baynham, Emeritus Professor of TESOL, who has been conferred as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor Baynham is a leading figure in the study of literacy, language and the sociolinguistics of migration and mobility.

On his arrival at Leeds, he became Chair of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (2000 - 2003). Professor Baynham has become well-known for his work in the teaching of English to adult migrants, and is a founder member of the University of Leeds Migration Research Network.

Upon the news of Fellowship, Professor Baynham said: "I feel very honoured to join the distinguished company of Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences, an organisation which has been significant in raising the profile of the Social Sciences in the UK."

A colleague, Dr James Simpson commented about Professor Baynham: "As an academic leader, Mike’s wise and very human approach has been a true strength. Likewise as a teacher, his engagement at a thoughtful human level with both his topics and his students has been greatly valued."

"I am completely delighted about the Fellowship - a tremendous honour, and one which is massively well-deserved".

New Fellows are drawn from academics, practitioners and policymakers across the social sciences. They have been recognised after an extensive peer review process for the excellence and impact of their work through the use of social science for public benefit.
