Dr Simon Green

Profile

I joined the university as a lecturer in 2012, after a career as a teacher, teacher educator and educational director in Africa, Central Europe, China and the Middle East. I taught EFL in the 1980s, in Darfur for the Sudanese Ministry of Education, and in Syria, Egypt and Iraq, for the British Council.  In the 1990s I worked on teacher education projects for the Overseas Development Agency and the British Council in China and the Czech Republic, and led the University of Wroclaw and Warsaw University of Technology English Language centres in Poland from 1996-1999. From 1999-2008 I worked on a major teacher education project in Oman, led by the University of Leeds and the Oman Ministry of Education, and from 2008-2011 I was the Director of English for the Omani Ministry of Higher Education. I hold degrees and professional qualifications from the universities of Bradford, Manchester, Cambridge and Leeds.

Research interests

My research focuses on the nature of academic literacies, the processes through which students construct them and the ways in which this construction may be scaffolded through EAP and other academic literacy interventions. I have particular interests in: the interpretation and appropriation of assessment feedback by undergraduates in higher education in the UK; the construction of disciplinary literacies by international postgraduates experiencing UK higher education for the first time; the interaction of language proficiency and disciplinary literacies in English-medium higher education in the Middle East; and, as a consequence of these three, in the possibilities of curricular expansions in higher education to  interweave disciplinary teaching and academic literacy instruction, drawing on insights from Socio-cultural Theory and Sheltered Instruction.
