Mr David Kirkham
Team Leader PGCE in MFL / Team Leader E-Profile
I began my teaching career with a year as an FLA followed by three years as a Lektor in Germany. I taught languages for many years at Tadcaster Grammar School where I was also involved in an MFL primary outreach programme. My final post was as at Barlby High School. For ten years I led the North Yorkshire training programme for FLAs which involved the preparation and delivery of residential courses. Here at the university I lead the PGCE MFL programme and provide support and training for E-Profile, the electronic tracking program and act as Link Tutor to schools in the School Direct programme.
I am particularly interested in the issue of transition from Primary to Secondary education and the role of early MFL teaching in that process. Led by Dr Gary Chambers I have conducted a good deal of research among school children and teachers in Yorkshire and in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. A further professional interest is that of testing and public examinations in MFL. I am the School’s representative on the OCR consultative committee.
I contribute to the core programme on such issues as the teaching of grammar, post-14 teaching and learning in MFL, ICT in MFL teaching and the use of the Target Language in the classroom.
I teach the language support classes in German and contribute to the ‘Linguists into Schools’ programme for undergraduates.
