Interests
My research and teaching focuses on language in use, in particular in English as an additional language contexts. I have done work on academic discourse, political discourse, English for Specific Purposes, second language listening, and curriculum theory and practice. My approach is problem driven and I use a range of methodologies, from the micro analysis of texts (including corpus based analysis) to more ethnographic approaches to data collection and analysis.
Research
I have authored or edited 12 books and special editions of journals, written 16 book chapters and published over 40 internationally refereed journal articles. I have published in most of the leading Applied Linguistics and Discourse Analysis journals, including Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Discourse and Society, English Language Teaching Journal, English for Specific Purposes Journal, International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, Journal of Language and Politics, Journal of Pragmatics, Language in Society, Text and Talk, and TESOL Quarterly.
