Interests
Background
I have been involved in TESOL for 21 years, working as a teacher, teacher educator and lecturer in the UK, New Zealand, Malta, Oman, and Turkey. Research has also involved spells in Hungary, Slovenia, Spain. Egypt, Malaysia, Italy, Spain and Vietnam. .
Current Responsibilities
At the School of Education I teach MA TESOL modules on Teacher Education and Research Methods. I also supervise a group of PhD students all of whom are working in the area of language teacher cognition.
Outside the School of Education, I am a member of TESOL's Research Standing Committee and on the editorial boards of TESOL Quarterly and Language Teaching Research.
Research Areas
My key area of research in TESOL is language teacher cognition - the study of what language teachers know, believe, think and do. For an brief introductory article click here. A bibliography (last updated 16 November 2009) can also be downloaded here. My book on these issues, 'Teacher Cognition and Language Education', was published in paperback edition in 2008.
I am also involved in researching the teaching of grammar in ELT classrooms and language teachers' conceptions of research. Research methods is another area of specialisation.
I welcome PhD students in any of these areas.
Presentations
A list of my recent and forthcoming invited conference presentations is available here. My next plenary will be Contemporary themes in language teacher education at the Third National Symposium on Foreign Language Teacher Education and Development in Chongqing, China (10-12 December 2009).
