Teacher and researcher in TESOL and language description, with particular interests in lexical approaches to language analysis and teaching, and applications of corpus linguistics to the study of metaphor and pragmatics.
Member of Centre for Language Education Research.
Interests
I have worked as a teacher of English and on Teacher Education courses in Spain, Turkey, Eastern Europe, South America, Hong Kong and Britain. I have also worked as a lexicographer and author for Collins COBUILD.
My research interests are in lexis, metaphor and pragmatics. I use large-scale corpora to investigate issues in these areas, using analytical techniques developed from corpus lexicography. I am also concerned with the applications of this research for language teaching, and for TESOL reference materials.
I teach modules on language description and language skills at undergraduate and Masters level, and I supervise postgraduate research in these areas. I also supervise visiting scholars with a particular interest in metaphor. I am on the editorial boards of the journals 'Metaphor and Symbol', 'Annual Review of Cognitive Linguistics' and 'Empirical Language Research'.
