Visiting Professor, University of Leeds; Executive Dean, School of Social Science, History and Philosophy, Birkbeck, University of London; Editor, Studies in the Education of Adults
Member of Lifelong Learning Institute, CPSE.
Interests
I am concerned with pedagogic identities in further, adult and higher education, and more broadly within professional learning and pedagogies. I have a particular concern with doctors' learning in the workplace. My colleague, Janice Malcolm, and I have developed a conceptual framework for exploring pedagogic identities. Within higher education, I am also interested in the relationships between teaching, research and discipline, particularly in relation to learning and knowledge production. I focus on the academic and other workplaces as sites for professional learning and pedagogies, and have been particularly concerned with transitions from learning to work. I have a background in feminist and critical psychology, although now regard myself as an educationalist, rather than a psychologist.
I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in June 2008, and a three-year University Teaching Fellowship in January, 2008.
External responsibilities
My main appointment is at Birkbeck, University of London, where I am Executive Dean for the School of Social Science, History and Philosophy. I am the Editor of the journal, Studies in the Education of Adults, and am on the Editorial Board of Studies in Continuing Education and Adult Education Quarterly. I am an honorary member of SCUTREA (the Standing Conference on University Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults).
Internal responsibilities
I am a Visiting Professor at the University of Leeds and contribute to the Masters in Clinical Education. I supervise research postgraduate students in the School of Education at the University of Leeds.
