Interests
BSL welcome: http://lutube.leeds.ac.uk/eduras/videos/522
I am a senior lecturer in deaf education and lead the MA in Deaf Education programme, which is a distance education course leading to the mandatory teacher of the deaf qualification.
A deaf student's experience: http://lutube.leeds.ac.uk/eduras/videos/573
My research focuses on the use of sign language in the education of deaf children and ways in which this supports language and literacy development. My recent funded research includes an ESRC project looking at deaf children's early literacy experiences in the home and a Nuffield funded project which examined the role of sign language for deaf children with cochlear implants.
I am keen to encourage research students (EdD or PhD) to work with me in deaf education particularly in the areas of deafness, development and learming and sign bilingual development and practice in schools and services. My energies are currently focused on developing more international collaboration between researchers and practitionners and a new MA in Deaf Education International for 2009. http://www.education.leeds.ac.uk/news/news_item.php?item=184
