Interests
I am a lecturer in the School of Education offering specialisms in the primary curriculum and pedagogy and early childhood education and a particular interest in teaching and learning primary mathematics. I am Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Childhood, Education and Culture Degree Programme and my teaching at undergraduate level is mainly based in this area. I also teach on the School’s MA and MA Teaching Programmes and supervise masters and doctoral students. I am Admissions Tutor for the BA (Hons) Childhood, Education and Culture and Childhood Studies Degree Programmes, and I am Head of Assessment for the Undergraduate Area in the School of Education.
I was appointed to the School of Education in September 1998 to lead the School of Education’s Primary PGCE Programme. Between 1992 and 1998 I was a Senior Lecturer in Teaching Studies at St John’s University in York, prior to that, I taught in primary schools in Leeds for eighteen years. During this time, I had management experience as both Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher and was seconded for a year to the Primary Advisory Service in Leeds as an Advisory Teacher for Mathematics.
My first degree was in Education (B.Ed with First Class Honours) my second degree is a Masters in Applied Educational Studies (York University), and my doctorate focuses upon the teaching and learning of mathematics (D.Phil York University) My research interests are the primary curriculum and primary pedagogy; early childhood education; teaching and learning primary mathematics, initial teacher education and the teacher as a developing professional.
