Interests
My principal research and teaching interests are in international, comparative and intercultural aspects of educational leadership and management, both in schools and the higher education sector. Prior to joining the School of Education, I worked in comprehensive schools, first as a history teacher and later as a pastoral middle manager and deputy headteacher. I also worked as an associate postgraduate distance learning tutor with the Centre for Educational Leadership and Management, University of Leicester, and as a consultant with both the Universities of Leicester and Lincoln on a number research projects, including the management of sixth form colleges and educational policy related to diversity and choice in the post-16 sector.

Research
My doctoral theses cover two separate areas of educational research: school governance (EdD) and subject leadership in secondary schools (PhD). My current interests include theory related to school culture, the ethics of school leadership, the professional learning and continuing professional development of educational leaders, research cultures in universities and leadership in the 14-19 curriculum. My international research interests include educational policy, schooling and higher education management in China. Recent and current Doctoral research topics under my supervision are as follows:
1. Reforming secondary education in Bahrain: A multi-case study of the policy implementation and the management of change at Alkurumah boys' and Almajd girls' secondary schools (EdD).
2. Understanding consumer and marketing strategies: The case of the private higher education sector in Syria (PhD).
3. Teacher leadership and its implications for teacher motivation in some secondary schools in Abuja, Nigeria (PhD).
4. The evaluation of school leadership and management in Bahrain: A critical assessment of current policy and practice (PhD).
Teaching
I teach on the MA programme in International Educational Management with responsibilty for two modules: Developing Leadership and Developing Financial and Material Resources. I also teach a number of bespoke management programmes, including a ten-week summer school in higher educational management for senior Chinese university managers and academics (since 2005), and a four-week school leadership programme for heads and deputy heads of Indonesian Islamic boarding schools (2004-2008).
