PGCE (Teacher Training)

A School of Education PGCE Geography class
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a one-year course for graduates wishing to follow a programme of Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Our PGCE programmes are designed to help you rise to the challenge by focusing on developing the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding which relate to learning and teaching in schools.

The School of Education works in partnership with over 100 local schools to help prepare you to enter the teaching profession, which is as challenging as it is rewarding. The PGCE includes a range of academic tuition and teaching experience, all of which is considered both in assessment for the PGCE, and as evidence that you have met the Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

We offer Primary and Secondary PGCE courses in the following subjects;

Primary PGCE

Secondary PGCE

We also offer the Rothschild Community of Excellence combined PGCE/MSc programme, which allows students to pursue a Secondary PGCE in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry while taking part in cutting-edge research within the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

All trainees will have access to an excellent central library and the Teaching Resources Library in Hillary Place, and we provide full academic and professional support through our University-based tutors and school-based tutors where appropriate. If you are from a Black or Minority Ethnic Group, you might also want to visit the Teachers for the Twenty-First Century website.

To help fund the next generation of inspirational teachers, eligible Primary and Secondary trainees are entitled to a tax-free bursary of £9,000 for Mathematics, Modern Languages and Science trainees, £6,000 for English and £4,000 for Primary trainees. You may also qualify for a 'Golden Hello' of £5,000 for Maths and Science teachers or £2,500 for MFL teachers, payable after the NQT induction year has been successfully completed. For further information please visit the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) website.

If you wish to continue to study with us once becoming a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) of Primary and Secondary Education, you may apply to carry credits forward to the part-time MA Teaching programme, which allows you to pursue a higher degree while working as a teacher.
