The BA (Hons) Childhood Studies programme offers rigorous, interdisciplinary academic study in the fields of childhood, education, sociology, social policy, and educational/social psychology.

It will offer you the opportunity to explore in depth some of the most challenging and fundamental issues concerning children, young people and their families in the twenty-first century. Our teaching quality rated as 24 out of 24 in the last QAA review.

Who is the course for?

This interdisciplinary degree is designed for both school-leavers and mature students. The course will be of interest to you if:

  • you are interested in the academic study of childhood, education and culture, or are working towards careers including services for children, young people and their families;
  • you enjoy working with children, young people and their families and wish to gain a degree to enhance your career prospects.

The degree offers a broad foundation for career choices in the education, health, social care, and leisure industries, including multi-professional teams.

Career Opportunities

As a Childhood Studies graduate from the University of Leeds, your future career prospects are bright. The degree offers a broad foundation for career choices in the education, health, social care, and leisure industries, including those destined to work in multi-professional teams. This is because the degree adopts a multi-disciplinary approach, which crosses traditional subject boundaries and recognises the growing demand for professionals with a substantive background in both education and the allied caring professions or creative cultural sectors.

The results from the University's 'Destination of Leavers' survey for undergraduate students graduating in 2006 revealed 100%* of the School of Education's Childhood Studies students were in employment or further study 6 months after graduating. If you are thinking about a career in teaching, you may also wish to apply for a place on a PGCE Primary teacher training course - 10 of last year's Childhood Studies graduates chose to do so in 2006, including 4 who opted to stay on in the School and train on its successful PGCE Primary programme.

* This figure relates to UK/EU students who were available for work or study and whose destinations were known.
