Doctor of Education (EdD)
The Programme
The Doctorate in Education forms part of our Continuing Professional Development provision and provides you with the opportunity to reflect on educational issues through:
- structured, professional teaching and study informed by the most up-to-date research, and
- the opportunity to engage in original research, normally under the guidance of two supervisors
You will leave the course with an advanced understanding of a range of educational issues and the skills and knowledge required to conduct and evaluate independent research.
The School of Education offers research supervision in the following key areas:
- Human rights and citizenship
- ICT in education
- Inclusive education
- Language education
- Lifelong learning (including post-14 education and higher education)
- Mathematics education
- Science education
Who is the course for?
The EdD is designed for professionals in education and related disciplines who wish to keep abreast of a range of educational topics and refine their research skills.
You will follow a series of taught modules, including research methods and their specialist fields of study, which will be assessed by written assignments. You will also be required to submit a thesis based on your own research.
The EdD is available on a full-time basis (3 - 4 years) or as a part-time programme for UK/EU students only (5 - 7 years).

Leeds is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the UK as well as one of the greenest, with lots of parks and many places of natural beauty to visit nearby. Its central location in the UK means that it is well situated for access to the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District, the Lake District and the coast. The city centre is within easy walking distance of the University campus.
Rich in history with a growing economy and the centre of a region of great cultural diversity, Leeds is a very affordable city for students to live in, having recently topped the Royal Bank of Scotland's Student Living Index 2007 as the most cost-effective place to study. The city has a lively events calendar packed with music, art, cinema, theatre and dance and throughout the year is host to major concerts and festivals. Leeds welcomes international students
The University of Leeds offers a truly multicultural study environment with 15% of its student population coming from outside the United Kingdom. The University is committed to providing an excellent service for international students and boasts extensive academic support services including an outstanding Language Centre and a Skills centre which offers courses to help international students improve their language.
It also has an active International Centre which brings together students from across the globe and is a source of guidance, information and support, as well as a great place to meet friends. There are special 'meet and greet' arrangements for students arriving at the local airport, bus and train stations at the beginning of the academic year. The University organises an 'Intro week' in September full of activities and events designed to introduce international students to the University and to help them settle smoothly into life at Leeds.
