This specialist programme is designed to develop a critical understanding of the methodological and theoretical issues in educational and social science research and will provide students with the knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to design, conduct, analyse and interpret research in education.
Students will examine philosophical issues, research design, methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation of results to achieve a generic grounding in research methods which combines breadth and depth, insight and capability.
Students will also be encouraged to select and integrate methods which are appropriate to the research issues and contexts they may encounter during their professional careers, rather than having to choose either a qualitative or quantitative research identity.
Who is the course for?
The programme is designed for professionals from the UK or abroad working in education or related fields who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the issues, principles and methods of research in education, in order to conduct, use and critically analyse these as part of their own professional development.
Potential students need to be aware that there is a substantial mathematical and statistical element to this programme. While this is covered as part of the programme, it is assumed that students will already be comfortable with intermediate level mathematics and have the confidence to extend this further.
