The MA Provision for Children with Developmental Disorders is directed at enhancing knowledge and expertise of working with children who have

  • Dyslexia
  • Developmental Coordination Disorder
  • Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder

The taught programme consists of two assessed modules and each one runs for 12 weeks (i.e. 12 x 2 hour taught evening sessions per module).

In order to complete an MA, a Critical Study is undertaken, addressing issues in the Teaching and Learning of Children with Developmental Disorders. Case studies with children in the student's own school are particularly encouraged. All critical studies are negotiated and supported on an individual basis with a tutor and involve a focus on a special area of expertise enabling dissemination to colleagues to the benefit of the student's School. On completion of the programme the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate a broad understanding of the concept of developmental disorders;
  • identify and show understanding of the characteristics of four major developmental disorders, namely developmental coordination disorder, dyslexia, autistic spectrum disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder;
  • evaluate and analyse critically approaches to assessment, identification and management of developmental disorders linking theory to practice
  • plan and develop a programme of work from identification through to intervention in their place of work;
  • demonstrate understanding of support systems for children with developmental disorders involving education, health and family
