The Assessment and Evaluation Unit (AEU)
The Unit has been established to undertake evaluation and assessment projects across all areas of education, but we have particular experience in:
- Mathematics assessment;
- Language assessment;
- Evaluation of educational initiatives;
- The impact of ICT on assessment;
- Technical issues in assessment;
- Statistical analysis and research methodology.
Through flexible team building the Unit has the capacity to respond rapidly, effectively and within deadlines to a wide range of evaluation and assessment projects. Teams are assembled from the wider pool of expertise within the School of Education to match the requirement of projects, building on the strengths of the core team in:
- Assessment question writing (both paper-based and computer-based);
- Test construction;
- Questionnaire design;
- Focus groups and interviews;
- Statistical methods.
At any time the work of the Assessment and Evaluation Unit ranges across a number of different education projects. At present these include:
- The Mawhiba project, which is intended to develop a mathematics programme for gifted and talented school students in schools in Saudi Arabia.
- Curriculum Pathways in Mathematics 14-19 - phase 2, which is a joint project with the Mathematics Education team in CSSME;
Members of the AEU are also involved in the Initial teacher training support work evaluation funded by the TDA.
Successfully concluded recent projects include:
- Evaluating the mathematics aspect of the Monitoring Pupil Progress project; and
- Investigating sources of difficulty in the KS3 ICT tests.
Members of the Unit are also involved in teaching at all levels, including the MA Mathematics Education, supervision of doctoral students and in writing and research.
