QCA was commissioned by the DfES to undertake a project partnership with the Secondary National Strategy, which is developing new approaches to teacher assessment in mathematics in the early years of secondary education (years 7, 8 and 9). The aim of the project is to devise a model of teacher assessment which involves a combination of teacher judgement of pupils' ongoing work and the outcomes of specially developed assessment tasks (“assessment packages”).

The Evaluation team’s job here in Leeds is to establish whether this approach:

  • will provide reliable and robust evidence of pupils’ progress
  • is manageable for schools, taking account of the current arrangements for mathematics assessment within year 7 to 9.

The project will involve close liaison with the 40 or so schools involved in the project and will require termly data collection from these schools in the form of both pupil assessment information and teacher views on how the project is going.

In addition, an investigation will be carried out into current assessment practice nationally in mathematics across the appropriate age range.

The final report is due in mid October 2006.
