Science Education Research in CSSME

Research in science education at CSSME is organized around a number of key areas. These and examples of associated projects are shown below.

Some projects run across several areas. A full list of current and recent projects is available.

Theory and evidence in teaching and learning science

The key focus in this research programme is on the way in which evidence derived from research can lead to improved teaching and learning.

We are in the process of establishing the Leeds Institute for Science Teaching Design (LISTeD), which will draw together research and knowledge transfer projects.

Scientific literacy for citizenship and social responsibility

How does the science curriculum enable students to engage critically yet in an informed way with the important science-related issues that they encounter in their lives?

Socio-cultural analysis of teachers' practices

The key linguistic and other semiotic modes of practice in which teachers engage is the central concern of this research programme.

Policy studies in science education

This area of work seeks to employ insights from the domains of historical, philosophical and policy studies to examine and critique the many reforms which currently impinge on the science curriculum.

The Centre houses a number of evaluative and teacher development projects

Doctoral work

A wide range of related work is undertaken by Research Students within the Centre.

Staff have extensive experience of doctoral supervision within their research programmes, including acting as a Marie Curie training site under the European Union Framework 5. If you wish to make enquiries about pursing doctoral studies in any of the above areas please contact the Director.
