TESOL Short Specialist Courses

Better Ways to Teach the Listening Skill in L2 Classrooms

This course is for teachers who would like to teach the listening skill in a more motivating and effective way. Listening still tends to be taught using methodologies which are not learner centred and which allow students little choice in what they listen to, or how they listen. These ways of teaching do not help students to develop their own listening strategies and take responsibility for developing their listening outside the classroom.

The course will begin by exploring the ways in which listening promotes learning, including language learning, and at the ways in which listening skills develop over time. It will draw on insights we can gain from fields in which listening is important in the L1, such as business and therapy. It will discuss the different skills and strategies involved in the listening skill, draw a distinction between 'skill' and 'strategy', and consider what this implies for the teaching of listening. The course will then give opportunities for participants to develop materials for teaching and assessing listening in their own teaching context, including listening projects and the use of the media.
