The role of sign language for deaf children with cochlear implants: good practice in sign bilingual settings

October 2005 - Ongoing

(Contact: Dr Ruth Swanwick)

Funded By: The Nuffield Foundation

This pilot project seeks to identify the role and benefits of sign language support for deaf children with cochlear implants by identifying good practice in sign bilingual settings. Sign bilingualism is an approach to the education of deaf children which considers sign language support and the role of deaf adults to be beneficial for all deaf children. As a pilot, this study will identify key areas of practice and shape a methodology for a larger national study into the different ways in which sign language and spoken language are used to support the linguistic and social/emotional development of children with cochlear implants.
