Aims

  • To produce a comprehensive review of literature on the subject of teacher training for teachers of adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL
  • To identify gaps in the body of literature and make recommendations for future research

The review pays particular attention to work focussing on the training of teachers to teach literacy, numeracy and ESOL, but also takes into account methodologies in other fields which are relevant to developing a broad awareness and understanding of developments in this area, including international ELT teacher training. In the context of other relevant fields, we include a search of relevant literature in Adult Education teacher education, since adult education principles are a crucial underpinning for teacher education in Adult Literacy/Numeracy and ESOL.

To support the project aim of making this an international literature review, a reference group of Adult Literacy/Numeracy and ESOL teacher education specialists has been consulted in order to ensure that relevant research in other countries will be channeled into the review. These include, in Australia Associate Prof. Anne Burns of NCELTR, Dr Hermione Scheeres of the University of Technology, Sydney (Adult ESOL and Literacy Teacher Education specialists), Betty Johnson (Adult Numeracy teacher education specialist), in Canada, Prof. Nancy Jackson of OISE (Adult Literacy, including Workplace), Ass. Prof. Bonny Norton of UBC (Adult ESOL). In South Africa, Mastin Prinsloo, University of Cape Town (Adult Literacy teacher education) and Dr Chris Wineberg of Peninsula Technikon (Adult Literacy teacher education).
