Research Areas

Human Rights and Citizenship

The Centre for Citizenship and Human Rights Education (CCHRE) was established to promote and develop research, consultancy and postgraduate studies in citizenship education and human rights education. It is a leading international centre in this field and welcomes students and researchers from around the world.

ICT in Education

The ICT in Education team are interested in the application of new technologies to innovative pedagogies and classroom practices including; Computer-mediated Communication and Collaborative Learning, Computer-based Assessment and Mobile Technologies and Learning Support Systems.

Inclusive Education

The core activity of the Inclusive Education team has traditionally been associated with Special Educational Needs. This aspect of education has long been a focus of interest and research strength in the School of Education and is associated with specialist programmes of study at Masters and doctoral levels.

Language Education

The Centre for Language Education Research (CLER) was established to promote research and teaching in Language Education. We see this as a broad field, drawing on both Applied Linguistics and Language Pedagogy, and encompassing first, second and foreign language learning at primary, secondary and post-compulsory levels. It is one of the largest groupings of its kind in the UK, and attracts large numbers of Masters and Doctoral students from around the world.

Lifelong Learning

The Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Leeds is a centre of excellence for research and postgraduate study about lifelong learning. It seeks to enhance lifelong learning for individuals, organisations and communities in the UK and overseas.

Mathematics Education Research

The Mathematics Education team between them enjoy research, supervising research students and teaching. They also work closely with the Assessment and Evaluation Unit. Research in maths education at CSSME falls into four main themes; Technology, Learning, Teaching Curriculum and Assement, The Application of Mathematics and The Use of ICT in KS2 and KS3 Mathematics.

Science Education Research

Research in science education at CSSME is organized around a number of key areas including; Theory and evidence in teaching and learning science, Scientific literacy for citizenship and social responsibility and Socio-cultural analysis of teachers' practices.
