Visiting Academics
Information for applicants
The University of Leeds has an international reputation for excellence in research and as such we are often asked to act as host to visiting academics from around the world wishing to pursue their professional interests in a dynamic academic environment.
The School welcomes visiting scholars from other institutions who have a clearly defined research plan that can be appropriately conducted here.
If you are interested in visiting the School of Education please consider the following information.
Visiting scholars will;
- work with an academic mentor on a subject of mutual interest/benefit
- contribute fully to the academic life of the School
- make at least one seminar presentation and/or
- develop a paper for publication
- register as a student
- work towards a qualification
- stay longer than 12 months
We will provide you with computing facilities (a staff username and access to a computer) and full library access, but we cannot guarantee a personal workspace for the duration of your visit.
The bench fee is £3,600 for one year and can be calculated pro rata for shorter visits. Living costs for your time in Leeds are estimated at around £9,000 per year and you will need to make your own living arrangements prior to arrival at the School. You may be entitled to apply for staff accommodation but this is extremely limited and usually needs to be booked at least three months in advance.
If your visit is to take place only during the summer months (July - September) you may be able to find vacant student accommodation - please contact the University Accommodation Office for further details. Alternatively the University staff publication The Reporter and Unipol Student Homes sometimes advertise accommodation for professional staff/visitors.
How to apply
Applicants for Visiting Scholar status should be a full-time member of another University with a clearly defined plan for research which can be conducted appropriately in the School of Education.
Applications will be considered in terms of your potential contribution to the School and its activities as well as our ability to support your area of research.
We therefore require the following from all our applicants:
- A detailed research plan (to include your research interests, preferred study areas and related personal publications)
- A list of the expected outcomes of your visit
- A copy of your CV
- A written reference from your current head of department
- The date you wish to start (not sooner than six months from the point of application)
- The proposed duration of your visit
- Contact name and details of any sponsorship you have
- Proof of identity (a scan of your passport's photo page)
Applications can be made any time of the year but please note that teaching terms are between October to December, February to March, and April to May.
